What Is a HireVue?
HireVue is an asynchronous video interview platform used by many investment banks as an initial screening step. Instead of scheduling a live conversation, candidates receive a link to record video responses to pre-determined questions. Each question has a preparation window (usually 30 seconds to 2 minutes) and a response window (usually 2-3 minutes).
Banks That Use HireVue
Many bulge bracket and middle market banks use HireVue, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, and Citi. Some elite boutiques have adopted similar platforms. The practice became widespread during COVID and has largely persisted as an efficient screening tool.
Typical Questions
HireVue questions are usually behavioral and motivational: Why investment banking? Why this bank? Tell me about a time you worked on a team. Describe a situation where you overcame a challenge. Walk me through your resume. Some banks include basic technical questions (what is EBITDA? walk me through a DCF at a high level).
How to Prepare
Practice recording yourself answering common questions. Use the STAR framework (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for behavioral answers. Maintain eye contact with the camera, speak clearly, and be concise within the time limit. Dress professionally even though you are at home. Test your technology beforehand (lighting, audio, internet).
Evaluation Criteria
Recruiters assess communication skills, structured thinking, genuine motivation, technical knowledge (if applicable), and professionalism. While AI-based assessment has been debated, most banks rely on human review of the recordings. The HireVue is primarily a filter — its purpose is to reduce a large applicant pool to a manageable number of Superday invitations.
Tips for Success
Be natural and conversational — robotic, over-rehearsed answers stand out negatively. Show energy and enthusiasm. Keep answers concise and structured. Have 2-3 prepared stories that can be adapted to multiple behavioral prompts. Practice the technology so you are comfortable with the format on the actual day.
After the HireVue
Candidates who pass the HireVue are typically invited to a Superday (final round) or sometimes an additional phone screen with a banker. Response timelines vary — some banks notify within 1-2 weeks, others take longer.
